How did Vindicta start?
The kernel of an idea for Vindicta dates back to 1998. James Robertson has a bit part in Elizabeth Longford’s book Wellington – The Years of the Sword. Robertson’s memoir written by his nephew further stimulated my research into the remarkable events of the summer of 1808.
Retirement gave the time to delve further. Visits to the National Archive, the British Library and Downside Abbey in Somerset to read primary sources were complemented by investigate secondary sources from Spain, France, Britain and Denmark. I also undertook a journey through northern Germany into Denmark to visit some of the sites of the action.
While this is a book of fiction, the story closely follows the events or reported events. The main characters all led fascinating lives. I am already researching a prequel and sequel of James Robertson’s adventures.
